What makes a city great? If we were to conduct a survey, I suspect that the top answers would include things like cost of living, healthcare, entertainment, public safety, diversity, and economic opportunities. These are important factors that make the place you call home not only liveable, but enjoyable. Well, it’s a good thing you live in Kankakee! This city has something for everyone, and its leaders are working every day to build on the progress of their predecessors to make the best version of Kankakee possible.

Do you like the outdoors? The Kankakee Valley Park District maintains over 20 parks that feature playgrounds, tennis, basketball, and pickleball courts, and walking paths for the community to enjoy. Bird Park has the Don Palzer Bandshell that many outdoor music events are held at throughout the year. I surely don’t have to mention the Kankakee River that flows through the city, which provides numerous opportunities for boating, fishing, canoeing, and other water activities, but maybe you aren’t familiar with the Kankakee Riverfront Society’s work. KRS is working on a multiyear project to enhance the riverfront and bring event more amenities right to the water – walking paths, scenic views, business such as kayak rentals, and much more.

Are you interested in the arts community? The Kankakee Arts CoLab hosts regular music events as well as classes and meetups for creatives. Hedgeapple Arts Studio has a great lineup of regularly scheduled classes for people of all ages to learn skills such as oil painting and ceramics. Merchant Street Art Galley of Artists with Autism supports a wide variety of workshops and events – even bringing in international guests.

Looking to support the local economy or start a business of your own? New businesses are opening all the time! The Economic and Community Development Agency – our office – helps entrepreneurs get started and hosts workshops to answer common questions. There are many small businesses selling many of the things you’re looking for every day – food, clothing, housing and financial services, entertainment essentials, and more. You don’t have to go far to find the perfect gift or for assistance with your own economic pursuits.

Need something to do with the kids? The Success by 6 Coalition consists of several different local organizations who offer programming for children and their caregivers. One new program offered is called Connect and Play, which provides caregivers an opportunity to have questions answered, build community with others, and give space for children to play. There is a new website available that has a calendar of local kid-friendly events. It is called kankakeewithkids.com. Events can be submitted by local organizations and viewers can filter results by town.

Kankakee is a city made up of a wide array of people. That diversity can be seen through all the activities offered throughout the year – far more than I’ve shared here. It is a city with no shortage of opportunity or fun. And if you feel like something is missing, it can be found or created. Whatever you’re looking for – Kankakee has it.

 ¿Qué hace que una ciudad sea grandiosa? Si hiciéramos una encuesta, sospecho que las principales respuestas incluirían aspectos como el costo de vida, la atención médica, el entretenimiento, la seguridad pública, la diversidad y las oportunidades económicas. Estos son factores importantes que hacen que el lugar que llamas hogar no solo sea habitable, sino también agradable. ¡Qué bueno que vives en Kankakee! Esta ciudad tiene algo para todos, y sus líderes trabajan a diario para aprovechar el progreso de sus predecesores y crear la mejor versión de Kankakee posible.

 ¿Te gusta la vida al aire libre? El Distrito de Parques del Valle de Kankakee mantiene más de 20 parques con áreas de juegos infantiles, canchas de tenis, baloncesto y pickleball, y senderos para que la comunidad disfrute. El Parque de las Aves cuenta con el Don Palzer Bandshell, donde se celebran numerosos eventos musicales al aire libre durante todo el año. No hace falta mencionar el río Kankakee que atraviesa la ciudad y que ofrece numerosas oportunidades para navegar, pescar, navegar en canoa y otras actividades acuáticas, pero quizás no conozcas el trabajo de la Sociedad de la Ribera de Kankakee. KRS está trabajando en un proyecto plurianual para mejorar la ribera y acercar más servicios al agua: senderos, vistas panorámicas, negocios como alquiler de kayaks y mucho más.

¿Te interesa la comunidad artística? El Kankakee Arts CoLab organiza eventos musicales regulares, además de clases y encuentros para creativos. El Hedgeapple Arts Studio ofrece una excelente selección de clases regulares para que personas de todas las edades aprendan habilidades como pintura al óleo y cerámica. La Galería de Arte Merchant Street para Artistas con Autismo organiza una amplia variedad de talleres y eventos, e incluso invita a invitados internacionales.

¿Buscas apoyar la economía local o emprender un negocio propio? ¡Abren nuevos negocios constantemente! La Agencia de Desarrollo Económico y Comunitario, nuestra oficina, ayuda a emprendedores a empezar y organiza talleres para responder preguntas frecuentes. Hay muchos pequeños negocios que venden todo lo que buscas a diario: comida, ropa, vivienda, servicios financieros, artículos esenciales de entretenimiento y más. No tienes que ir muy lejos para encontrar el regalo perfecto o para ayudarte con tus propios proyectos económicos.

¿Necesitas algo que hacer con los niños? La Coalición Success by 6 está compuesta por varias organizaciones locales que ofrecen programas para niños y sus cuidadores. Un nuevo programa, Connect and Play, ofrece a los cuidadores la oportunidad de resolver dudas, crear comunidad y brindar espacio para que los niños jueguen. Existe un nuevo sitio web con un calendario de eventos locales para niños: kankakeewithkids.com. Las organizaciones locales pueden enviar eventos y los usuarios pueden filtrar los resultados por ciudad.

Kankakee es una ciudad con una gran diversidad de personas. Esa diversidad se refleja en todas las actividades que se ofrecen durante todo el año, muchas más de las que he compartido aquí.
